Quantum Of Solace Movie Review: 3/5

Labels:

Casino Royale may have given the James Bond series a shot in the arm, setting new standards of realism, but watchingQuantum of Solace, the new film in the series, how you wish they hadn't drained out all the sexiness and the humour that is so vital to Bond's appeal.

No longer is James Bond a glamorous British spy who devours gorgeous women for breakfast, lunch and dinner; no longer is he the sharp-witted fellow who's got a smart repartee for every occasion.

Quantum of Solace to release in India before US

Labels: ,

In a detour from convention, the 22nd film on the charismatic and debonair secret agent James Bond - “Quantum of Solace” - will hit Indian theatres a week prior to its release in the US.The film will first release in Britain Oct 31 followed by its release in India Nov 7. Only then will the film open for Bond lovers in the US Nov 14.

“Quantum of Solace” is the sequel to 2006 Bond flick “Casino Royale”, based on author Ian Fleming’s eponymous 1953 novel. The latter was also the first to star Daniel Craig as James Bond.

The sequel, being released in India by Sony Pictures, will see Daniel back from where he left his journey as the elusive British agent 007 in “Casino Royale”.

“James Bond has a huge equity in this country and Bond films have always been a hit here. November 7 will see the biggest roll out for any Hollywood film in India as we would like to give our audiences the thrill of seeing ‘Quantum of Solace’ even before the US does,” said Sony Pictures managing director Kercy Daruwala.

The Bond series are spy films inspired by Ian Fleming’s novels about a fictional agent Commander James Bond. Between 1962 and 2006, 21 films of the series have been released, qualifying it as one of the longest running series in film history.

“Quantum of Solace”, like other Bond films, also promises to offer viewers some nail biting drama and hi-octane adventure apart from exotic locations, glamorous girls, exciting car chases, and hi-tech gadgets.

Michael Crichton 1942 to 2008

Author Michael Crichton is shown in this May 2000 file photograph (Jeff Christensen/Reuters)

Michael Crichton

Michael Crichton, the bestselling author behind the fictional world of Jurassic Park, died today at the age of 66 after a battle with cancer that he hid from the public eye.

Crichton, author of more than a dozen best-selling novels and creator of the medical drama series, ER, died in Los Angeles, a statement from his family, posted on the writer’s website, said.

Describing his fight with cancer as “courageous and private”, the statement said: “While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us - and entertained us all while doing so - his family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes.

“He did this with a wry sense of humour that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.”

The son of a journalist, Crichton was born in 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, but grew up in New York state. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University before tutoring at Cambridge University in anthropology and later registering at Harvard Medical School.

During his medical training, he began to secretly write novels, writing under a pseudonym, but was eventually outed after A Case of Need, which he wrote using the alias Jeffery Hudson, won the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Allan Poe Award, in 1968.

Crichton, whose books have sold more than 150 million copies worldwide, was heavily influenced by his scientific training, and often conjured up visions of dystopian worlds that bore the brunt of botched attempts at scientific advancement.

His first bestseller, The Andromeda Strain, which speculated upon the devastating effects of an extraterrestrial micro-organism infecting the human race, was published while he was still a medical student.

Thirteen of his books were turned into films, including Jurassic Park, which told of recreating dinosaurs via DNA of the beasts contained in blood within preserved mosquitos. The film, directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1993, took nearly $1 billion worldwide, and in 2002 Crichton had a newly-discovered ankylosaur named for him: Crichtonsaurus bohlini.

On the small screen he was the creator of ER, the American hospital drama in which George Clooney shot to fame. The project was originally set to be a film, also directed by Spielberg, who put it on ice in order to make Jurassic Park. Crichton won an Emmy, a Peabody, and a Writer’s Guild of America Award for the programme.

He also had an interest in computers, and Westworld, another of his films, was the first movie to utilise computer-generated special effects, in 1973. His passion for the technique in film production led to him being awarded Technical Achievement Academy Award in 1995.

Physically a dominant figure, at 6ft 9in, he found an unlikely ally in President Bush, with whom he shared a sceptical view of global warming. His 2004 novel, State of Fear, was condemned by environmentalists, but Crichton maintained that his conclusions were misrepresented.

Crichton had a turbulent lovelife, marrying five times, four of which ended in divorce. His daugher, Taylor, is from his fourth wife, Anne-Marie Martin, with whom he wrote the 1996 film, Twister. At the time of his death, he was married to Sherri Alexander, a 45-year-old actress.

The family statement added: “Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand.

“He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves behind the greatest gifts of a thirst for knowledge, the desire to understand, and the wisdom to use our minds to better our world.

Crichton’s family said that he would have a private funeral, and requested that their privacy be respected.

Heroes Movie Review (2008)

Labels:

Keywords: ibn review, cnn ibn review heroes, masand review heroes, cnnibn

FAR-FROM-PERFECT: Heroes is a far-from-perfect film, too long and packed with too many songs.

Director: Samir Karnik

Cast: Mithun Chakraborty, Sunny Deol, Salman Khan, Preity Zinta, Sohail Khan, Bobby Deol, Dino Morea, Vatsal Seth

There's a scene in Heroes in which Sunny Deol on a wheelchair, playing an Air Force pilot who's lost both his legs in war, makes mincemeat out of a group of goondas at a nightclub. Using his fists to punch them, pound them and pummel them into putty, he then proceeds to crawl around the room on his fists, smashing the tiles and the bones of anyone who dares attack him. The message is clear: you may have lost your limbs, but if you've fought for your country, you'll never lose your spirit.

Heroes is a film that has its heart in the right place, but I'm still trying to locate its brain...continued>>

Clooney, Pitt, Rooney to lend voice for animation film

Labels:

Brad PittLondon, Oct 24 (IANS) Hollywood superstars George Clooney and Brad Pitt along with English footballer Wayne Rooney are going to give voice-overs for the three leading men in an animation film based on a children’s novel penned by Geri Halliwell. The Lavender series has been penned by former Spice girl Geri Halliwell who is also voicing for the lead character, Ugenia Lavender, in the movie, reports mirror.co.uk.

“It’s a brilliant project and I hope to be really hands-on with it. I’ve already agreed to voice the character of Ugenia which makes sense as she’s pretty much based on me anyway,” said Halliwell.

She added: “When I wrote the books I tried to make them appeal to all ages - there are lots of subtle in-jokes, many based on celebrities, which adults will spot straight away and, I hope, find funny.

“For instance, Crazy Trevor, Ugenia’s friend in the series, reminds me a lot of Wayne Rooney in both looks and personality. I am really hopeful he’ll agree to voice the part. I get the impression he’d be up for doing it just for fun,” she shared.

Halliwell also said that she was desperate to have Clooney on board her film.

“I’ve not met Brad Pitt so he’s unlikely, realistically, to take part but I am desperate to get the gorgeous George on board,” she averred.

Thakeray to spend night in jail, nightmare in Mumbai

Labels:

Mumbai: At 0300 hrs IST on Tuesday, the Maharashtra government finally acted after days of dithering. Maharashtra Police arrested Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief, Raj Thackeray from Ratanagiri, 380 km from Mumbai.

Raj Thackeray was arrested for provoking hatred among communities as his supporters vented their anger by indulging in mindless violence and torching public transport to hold India's financial capital to ransom.

The news of his arrest reached the metropolis before he did and even that early in the day, MNS activists were on the streets, venting their anger on private and government property.

As the day progressed, so did the violence on Mumbai's streets. Public transport was targetted, taxis and scooters stayed off the roads, shops and schools shut down in several areas to avoid any trouble. The office of the state Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam was also vandalised.

Broken glass pieces on the road were evidence enough of the conflict between security agencies and unruly MNS supporters. The incident may be Raj Thackeray's opportunity to gain political mileage and show political strength to his opponents, but for an average Mumbaikar this is nothing but hooliganism, an identity the MNS seems to be proud of.

There was no curfew but office goers were told to return home and many commercial establishments, especially those run or managed by non-Maharashtrians, chose not to open at all. All schools and colleges closed and most Mumbai streets were deserted as scared residents hid in their houses to avoid the wrath of the MNS.

The toll by mid-afternoon - 38 public buses set on fire, at least 40 private vehicles damaged in stone throwing, 350 taxis and 60 autorickshaws damaged or burnt, nearly 90 percent of the total 105,000 autorickshaws and 66,000 taxis off the roads. And the result, massive inconvenience to Mumbaikars caught in the crossfire as police were forced to fire teargas shells and wield the stick to control the mobs.

Describing the arrest as a cowardly act, MNS' Nagpur unit chief Hemant Gadkari told agencies that about 100 young party workers grouped in four motorcycle squads fanned out to different parts of the city to register their protest.

There was violence in other parts of Maharashtra too. In Satara town, for instance, MNS workers set fire to a bus depot, while in Nagpur several state transport buses were attacked. The police made about 2,000 preventive arrests.

RAGE OVER RAJ: MNS supporters resorted to stone-pelting at police vehicles outside the Bandra cour

New Delhi: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, who was arrested on Tuesday morning, has been sent to two-week judicial custody by a court in suburban Bandra in Mumbai for an attack by his party's activists on north Indians who were appearing for a railway exam in Kalyan district.

However, Thackeray secured bail in the case of attack on the candidates in Bandra.

Minutes after Thackeray was granted judicial custody, DGP of Maharashtra AN Roy told CNN-IBN, “Maharashtra is under control. We had some incidents of violence after the arrest but now everything is under control. Going by MNS’ track record we had prepared for such protests and violence.”

MNS workers on Sunday had attacked non-Maharashtrians appearing for a Railway board recruitment examination in several parts of the state. Thackeray was arrested from Ratnagiri, about 250 km from Mumbai, early on Tuesday.

Thackeray was presented before a magistrate in the Bandra court, who granted him bail on a surety of Rs 15,000 in the case of attack on north Indian candidates in Chetna College in Bandra.

However, the MNS chief was sent to judicial custody till November 4 for the attack on non-Maharashtrians in Kalyan.

After spending a night in jail, Thackeray will on Wednesday be presented before a magistrate in Kalyan, who will decide whether to grant bail or not.

Two truckloads of Rapid Action Force personnel were stationed outside the court for security.

Even before Thackeray was produced in court, over 2,000 slogan-raising supporters had gathered there, and the police resorted to a lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

MNS supporters resorted to stone-pelting at police vehicles outside the Bandra court. The supporters also stoned a police van carrying detained MNS activists. Police were forced to fire tear gas shells and resorted to baton charge to control the mobs.

This is the second time in eight months that Thackeray has been arrested for his tirade against north Indians.

MNS protestors hold Mumbai to ransom

Transferred to Mumbai amidst tight security, Thackeray was immediately whisked off to the Bandra-Kurla Complex police station, where his wife Sharmila and other party office-bearers were present.

Frank Wead promoted United States Naval aviation

Labels:

Frank Wilber "Spig" Wead (October 24, 1895 in Illinois – November 15, 1947) U.S. Navy aviator turned screenwriter who helped promote United States Naval aviation from its inception through World War II.

A 1917 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Frank "Spig" Wead began to promote Naval Aviation after World War I through air racing and speed competitions. This competition, mainly against the United States Army (and its leader Jimmy Doolittle), helped push U.S. military aviation forward. These competitions would give military aviation a much-needed spotlight in the public eye. The public attention that it generated helped push Congress to fund the advancement of military aviation. During World War I, he served on a mine layer in the North Sea.[1] After World War I he was a test pilot for the Navy.
