Rock On 2008- Music Review: Farhan Akhtar impresses as a singer

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy may hit the bull’s eye with this energetic and spirited album. Comprising nine tracks, the album has wonderful lyrics that have been appropriately composed and incredibly rendered by Farhan Akhtar, marking his debut as a singer.
The title song “Rock on” is one of those blessed by Farhan’s vocals. With a heavy base and electric guitar strumming, the number has been well composed.
Farhan also croons “Pichle saat dinon mein”. The rock number has interesting lyrics. An enjoyable track, it will surely be enjoyed even more on the big screen.
Then, there is an approximately six-and-a-half minute track titled “Sinbad The Sailor” rendered by Raman Mahadevan and Farhan, an enjoyable piece. There’s nothing extraordinary about this track, but it doesn’t fail to impress.
It’s Farhan yet again, and this time with “Socha hai” and he does an impressive job.
Caralisa Monteiro beautifully renders “Phir dekhiye”. The singer has handled the responsibility of a solo singer pretty well and Javed Akhtar’s lyrics are trendy and suit the theme. The song is serenity personified with just a guitar accompanying the singer.
The composers slow down a bit in “Tum ho toh”. Again, with a soft rock base, the track moves at a slower pace, with a romantic and dreamy tinge to it. The lyrics and rendition are credible, like most of the previous songs.
Dominique Cerejo sings “Ye tumhari meri baatein”. What’s most catchy about Cerejo’s rendition is her unusual, contemporary and western voice that suits such a genre. A dawdling number that would find maximum fans among the fairer sex.
Suraj Jagan sings the high-on-rock “Zehreelay”. For the song Javed Akhtar moves on a different route and pens some weird lyrics. Suraj croons like a typical high-on-life rock star, making the track different from the rest of the lot. A fine number!
There are a couple of things that stand out in this album and make the difference - Farhan’s fresh voice, Javed Akhtar’s trendy lyrics and the composers’ innovativeness. The album will set the cash registers ringing for sure.

Just released on August 29 with the movie “Disaster Movie“, comedy story under the same directors from Scary Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet The Spartans, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer and the same film making team.
Feedback to the movie is not quite good: for those people who have seen some of them said
“can’t give less than zero stars for a movie, but Disaster Movie deserves it.”
“Disaster Movie” is aptly named. The movie is a disaster. It’s a mish-mash of pratfalls, gross-outs, little people, glam models, bad costumes and lame jokes.” posted on on a website.

Dhaam Dhoom, technically good but fails to impress (Review)

Sriram, Manikandan, Rajasekhar; Art: Thotta Tharani; Music: Harris Jayraj; Direction: Jeeva; Rating: **This last hurrah for celebrated cinematographer-director Jeeva who died during its filming in Russia betrays the fact that he didn’t complete “Dhaam Dhoom”.
Despite being technically sound, thanks to art director Thotta Tharani, the score of Harris Jayraj and combined cinematography of P.C. Sriram, Manikandan and Rajasekhar, the movie fails to impress as it looks more like a disjointed stack of picture postcard shots.
Gautam Subramaniam (Jeyam Ravi), a doctor is all set to marry village belle Shenbaga (Kangana Ranaut). He leaves for Russia to attend a medical conference days before his wedding and gets involved with a Slav seductress Anna (Kojernikova Maria). He gets sloshed with vodka in a nightclub and before he can say Das Vadanya (goodbye in Russian), the girl is found dead in his bedroom.
An Indian origin diplomat-lawyer duo, played by Jayram and Lakshmi Rai respectively seem to be Gautam’s benefactors.
Gautam escapes from the custody of the Russian cops and after a painstaking investigation discovers that one of his benefactors pulled the strings with a deadly motive.
Harris Jayaraj has excelled himself and his work has been embellished by superb photography.
Art direction by Thotta Tharani lends credibility to even some of the patchwork done in Chennai.
Jayram in a surprising shade of grey has performed with aplomb.
And there end the plus points of the film.
Ravi looks a misfit doing his daredevil stunts while Kangana Ranaut hardly looks like an Indian village belle.

Robert Frost's Tricky Poem Analysis of The Road Not Taken
Labels: EducationRobert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” has been one of the most analyzed, quoted, anthologized poems in American poetry. A wide-spread interpretation claims that the speaker in the poem is promoting individualism and non-conformity.
A Tricky Poem
Frost claims that he wrote this poem about his friend Edward Thomas, with whom he had walked many times in the woods near London. Frost has said that while walking they would come to different paths and after choosing one, Thomas would always fret wondering what they might have missed by not taking the other path.
About the poem, Frost asserted, "You have to be careful of that one; it's a tricky poem - very tricky." And he is, of course, correct. The poem has been and continues to be used as an inspirational poem, one that to the undiscerning eye seems to be encouraging self-reliance, not following where others have led.
But a close reading of the poem proves otherwise. It does not moralize about choice, it simply says that choice is inevitable but you never know what your choice will mean until you have lived it...

Kolkata, Aug 30 (ANI): Dr. Krishna Kumar Birla, the noted industrialist of the Birla family, died at his residence after a brief illness on Saturday morning. He was 90.
He served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, and is survived by three daughters Nandini Nupani, Shobhana Bhartia, who is the vice chairperson and editorial adviser of Hindustan Times and Saroj Potddar.
Birla, who was the Chairman of Hindustan Times and several Birla Group of industries, was ill for the last fortnight.

Critics haven't much good to say about the plot of The House Bunny, but they do have much praise to heap on its star, Anna Faris. Nathan Lee begins his review in the New York Times by proclaiming: "All hail Anna Faris, fake bimbo par excellence, master of the birdbrained double take, our reigning queen of intelligent stupidity." Lou Lumenick in the New York Post begins his by observing: "Perhaps only Anna Faris could make a female-empowerment comedy produced by Adam Sandler tolerable." And in the Toronto Star, Linda Barnard starts off: "The House Bunny pulls a rabbit out of a hat with Anna Faris, whose comic charms -- to say nothing of her physical ones -- work some magic on this otherwise weak effort."

In its larger nodal role, it acts as the formulator of policy and the watchdog of the Government ensuring that certain accepted standards and norms, as laid down by it, are followed by all Ministries/Departments in the recruitment, regulation of service conditions and posting transfers and deputation of personnel as well as other related issues. Towards this end, guidelines are issued by it for the benefit of all Ministries/Departments and it monitors the implementation of these guidelines. It also advises all organizations of the Central Government on issues of Personnel Management. At a more immediate level, the Department has the direct responsibility of being the cadre controlling authority for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Central Secretariat Service (CSS). The Department also operates the Central Staffing Scheme under which suitable officers from All India Services and Group `A' Central Services are selected and then placed in posts at the level of Deputy Secretary/Director and Joint Secretary, on the basis of tenure deputation. The Department also deals with cases of appointment to posts of Chairman, Managing Director, full-time functional Director/ Member of the Board of Management of various public sector undertakings/enterprises, corporations, banks and financial institutions. It also deals with the assignment of Indian experts to various developing countries.

Story
Aditya (Farhan Akthar), Joe (Arjun Rampal), KD (Purab Kohli) and Rob (Luke Kenny) are four friends in college and form a rock band called 'Magik'. A slight misunderstanding shatters their entire future in music when they are about cut their maiden music album. Wife of Aditya happens to see their nostalgic photographs 10 years after the incident. The rest of the story is all about how they reunite and perform on the stage.
Actors:
The nobility of this film is such that you don't need glamorous guys for the roles of rock stars. Hence the director has chosen the right actors. Farhan Akthar surprises you with his honest performance. Arjun Rampal who has shown his other side as villain in Om Shanti Om film reveals the complete actor him. He is a revelation in this film. Purab Kohli helps in getting some light moments. Luke Kenny is amazing. Shahana Goswamy gave amazing performance. Koel Puri is sweet. Prachi Desai is good.
Technical departments:
Story - Screenplay - direction: The story of the film is simple. It is about four friends who separated due to a misunderstanding during college going for reunion after a gap of 10 years. What makes this story work is screenplay and narrative style. The director juxtaposed the current story with spaced flashbacks. And music is just a part of the film and the director concentrated more on the relationship aspects in a matured way. The director tried to be hip without losing the honesty in the story. The director conveniently avoided the bad aspects (drugs, sex and alcohol) of rock bands in order to make this film appear very noble. However the following scenes impress you the most -
1. When Debbie comes and explains her husband situation to Aditya.
2. When KD sings and dances to it in a party.
3. When Aditya sings the song written by Joe in the finale
Technical departments: The music by Shankar – Ehsaan – Loy is excellent and it's their kind of film. Cinematography by Jason West is superb. Editing is crisp. Dialogues by Farhan Aktar are good.
Analysis:
Is ROCK ON!! DIL CHAHTA HAI 2, one is tempted to ask. DIL CHAHTA HAI was a trendsetter when you look back, paving way for storytellers who wanted a new story to tell. Now, the DIL CHAHTA HAI team of Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar with director Abhishek Kapoor deliver ROCK ON!!, a film that makes you understand the true meaning of friendship.Put your hands together for one of the finest films of our times. Put your hands together for a director who pulls off a challenging subject with élan. Put your hands together for the actors who pitch in superlative performances.
ROCK ON!! is not just about music. It's about relationships. And relationships can get really complicated and messy as all of us would agree. ROCK ON!! captures it so beautifully, so sensitively, so effectively on celluloid.
Everything is in sync here, everything is just perfect. Flaws? Perhaps, the slow pacing. But come to think of it, you can't play with the edit in a film like this. ROCK ON!! also works because you can relate to the characters, you can relate to the moods, the egos, the highs and the lows...
ROCK ON!! is the story of four friends [Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Luke Kenny] who put together the greatest band this country has ever seen, Magic, but never make it. Years later, fate conspires to bring them together again and set them on a journey back to where they left off... a soul-searching pilgrimage into their past.
ROCK ON!! bears some resemblance to the Hollywood film THAT THING YOU DO [Tom Hanks], but it could be a mere coincidence. Director Abhishek Kapoor sets it in the Indian milieu efficiently. Watch the bonding shatter into pieces for no fault of anyone in particular actually. It's the circumstances that play the villain here and Abhishek captures it on lens so beautifully. The fragile relationships, how piece after piece is put together and the journey to the climax… the narrative is so compelling, it makes you feel you're witnessing all of it first-hand.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is perfect. It's completely in sync with the mood of the film. Connoisseurs of music have already showered the music with rave reviews and rightly so! Jason West's cinematography is fantastic. The screenplay and dialogues are commendable.
Every performance in the film deserves brownie points. Farhan Akhtar makes his debut as an actor and he displays rare maturity for a first-timer. Known as an accomplished director all along, Farhan will now be acknowledged as a mature actor as well. Arjun Rampal delivers his finest performance to date. Watch him emote those tough emotional moments and also as a failed person in the latter parts and you'd realize that he has only grown with the passage of time. Superb is the word!
Purab Kohli is tremendous and so is Luke Kenny. Purab has always delivered fine performances, but he's touched a new high this time. Luke is equally charged.
Prachi Desai scores in her very first feature. She has a challenging role and footage-wise too, it's substantial. Prachi brings in a lot of freshness and poise. Plus, she's a competent actor. Shahana Goswami is a talent to watch out for. Her performance is one of the most difficult ones for a newcomer and the confidence with which she carries it deserves to be lauded. Koel Purie has a brief role and she enacts it quite well.
On the whole, ROCK ON!! is an amazing experience. The highpoint is the emotional quotient, the skilful performances and the superb execution of the subject. At the box-office, this urban film holds tremendous appeal for metros and mini-metros. Business at multiplexes of Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and NCR, Kolkata and South in particular should be excellent. Very strongly recommended!
