Sun outage

A sun outage is an interruption in or distortion of geostationary satellite signals caused by interference from solar radiation. The effect is due to the sun's radiation overwhelming the satellite signal. Generally, sun outages occur in February, March, September and October, that is, around the time of the equinoxes. At these times, the apparent path of the sun across the sky takes it directly behind the line of sight between an earth station and a satellite. As the sun radiates strongly at the microwave frequencies used to communicate with satellites (C-band and Ku-band) the sun swamps the signal from the satellite. The effects of a sun outage can include partial degradation, that is, an increase in the error rate, or total destruction of the signal.

New Delhi: An unclaimed package was found in a sleeper coach of a Bhadrak-bound train in Howrah railway station on Tuesday in Kolkata.

The explosives were found in a passenger express inside a compartment. The package also carried a tag identifying it as one with explosives.

Panic spread in the station as soon as news of the explosives broke out. An intense search operation was launched at Platform number 21, where the train is still stationed.

Sniffer dogs were immediately sent to the platform to check if more such packages were hidden.

Senior railway and police officers have also rushed to the spot.

“Around one million employees of nationalised banks, old generation private banks and foreign banks will participate in the strike. We are against the government merging the banks and allowing foreign direct investment in the banking sector. We also want early settlement of employee benefit issues,” Venkatachalam said..........

Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS): More than 770,000 people Monday continued to face the fury of floods as the Mahanadi in Orissa and the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh were in spate affecting more areas including the national capital. Thousands of flood victims in Orissa continued to struggle for food and drinking water Monday as the overflowing Mahanadi river and its tributaries kept 570,000 people marooned. The toll in the Orissa floods rose to 29, Revenue Secretary G.V. Venugopala Sarma said Monday evening in Bhubaneswar.

In Uttar Pradesh, torrential rains led to the swelling of several rivers, inundating fresh areas and affecting over 200,000 people. Mathura, Agra and other cities along the Yamuna geared up to face floods as the water level in the river crossed the danger mark in New Delhi upstream.....

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's directorial debut Taare Zameen Par will be India's official entry for the Oscar 81st annual Academy awards for the best foreign film, the jury announced in Mumbai on Saturday.

The announcement was made by filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who headed the film federation of India (FFI) jury to select the film in Mumbai on Thursday.

Taare Zameen Par is written by Amole Gupte and was released in 2007. It received critical and Box Office acclaim.

Aamir said that the movie did business of Rs 131 crore at the Box Office world-wide. It is a sensitive story of an eight-year-old dyslexic child.

Other films in fray for selection were critically acclaimed Marathi films Valu and Tingya, Nishikant Kamat's Mumbai Meri Jaan, Neeraj Pandey's A Wednesday, Ashutosh Gowarikar's Jodhaa Akbar, Farhan Akhtar's Rock On!, Subhash Ghai's Black and White and Telugu film Ghanyam.

This will be Aamir Khan's second outing at the Oscars. His first home production Lagaan made history in 2001 when it reached the final nomination list of the foreign film category.

The awards ceremony will be held on February 22, 2009.

Meanwhile, chairman of the jury, Suneel Darshan said the committee members were unanimous in their decision to chose Taare Zameen Par to represent India at the Oscars.

"It was a difficult choice as all the remaining eight films were extremely good. Taare Zameen Par was favoured because of its universal theme," he added.

Darshan said Marathi films Valu and Tingya were highly praised by the committee for their excellent screenplay and treatment.

Marathi filmmakers Mahesh Kothare, Ajay Sarpotdar, art director Bijon Das Gupta, filmmaker Aruna Raje, Ravi Kottarakara from Chennai were other prominent members of the jury, he said.

Islamabad, Sep 20: A deadly suicide attack outside the high-security Marriott Hotel in the heart of Pakistan's capital left at least 60 people dead and hundreds injured.

The attack - one of the worst in Pakistan's history - caused a huge explosion outside the five-star hotel where families had gathered to celebrate Iftar - a celebration after a month of Ramzan.

A reporter at the scene told CNN that as many as 200 people were feared to be inside the building. Television images showed flames and smoke pouring out of the hotel and bodies being carried away.

"The explosion happened as a car reached the barricade outside the hotel," said a senior police official, adding that it appeared to have been a suicide attack.

The explosion left a 20-foot deep crater at the entrance.

Police sources said the dead include three South Koreans, two Saudis and one American. There were also foreigners among the injured......

Filmmaker Shyam Benegal's Welcome To Sajjanpur is not only one of the best films of this year, it's among the finest films you'll see in a long time. It is on the one hand, a humorous portrait of life in a small village in northern India; and on the other an honest exploration of human personalities.

It's also a remarkably progressive film that makes many important points, but does so subtly and intelligently, never beating its chest about it. ((pause)) With "Sajjanpur" Benegal proves once again that a simple plot with interesting characters is all it takes to engage an audience. Benegal is familiar with his milieu and understands his characters and their motivations intricately.

Shreyas Talpade plays Mahadev, one of the few literates in Sajjanpur, who makes a living writing letters for those who can't read and write themselves. For anything between fifty paise and two rupees, he'll dash off whatever communication the village folk urge him to.

For the compounder at the local dispensary who's besotted by a young widow, Mahadev writes a rousing love-note; for an elderly woman convinced her daughter's stars aren't quite in order he writes letters to her trusted astrologer enquiring how to ward off evil spirits; for a eunuch who's preparing to contest the village elections he scribbles off an impassioned plea for protection. His knack with words and his skill at writing persuasive letters makes him particularly popular with his neighbors.

When his childhood crush Kamla (played by Amrita Rao) approaches him to write to her husband in the city to communicate her frustration about being away from him so long, Mahadev lets his feelings for her get in the way. He manipulates the communication both ways in the hope of breaking up the couple and winning her heart himself.

Welcome To Sajjanpur is a placid film, not plot-driven but centred on the emotional journey of its characters. And what a colorful palette of characters Benegal serves up - the hassled 'mousi ' who cries through her nose, her headstrong scooter-riding daughter, the snake-charmer who carries around a rubber cobra, even the gangster-like politicians. It's evident that the director has nothing but affection for his characters, even the darker ones get their moments to shine. At the core of the drama, of course, is Mahadev.

Sometimes a character in a movie inhabits his world so freely, so easily that he creates it for us as well. Shreyas Talpade does that in Welcome To Sajjanpur, as the kind-hearted fellow who writes for free for those who can't afford to pay him, also the sly chap who plots to snatch his sweetheart from her absent husband. Benegal's protagonists are seldom black or white, and Mahadev can't be saddled with those labels either. He's a good man, but a little selfish. Not very different from any of us.

Welcome To Sajjanpur is one of Benegal's most evocative films, what a fine job he does of lacing it with social consciousness. The film dwells on relevant issues like widow remarriage, caste politics and superstition, but it's weaved intrinsically into the film's plot.

In this day of slapstick senseless comedy, Benegal delivers a film that's both witty and wise, and he's aided by a terrific cast that doesn't miss a beat. Divya Dutta, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Yashpal Sharma, Ravi Kissen, Ila Arun, every single one of them is in superb form. Amrita Rao is terrific as the conflicted, suffering bride, and Shreyas Talpade turns in a career-best performance as Mahadev. Watch him in that scene in which he's reading the letter Kamla's husband has sent to her in the end -- that is what you call an actor.

If Sajjanpur falters, it's in the length department. The film could have easily done with fewer songs, even though Shantanu Moitra's score is refreshingly wholesome.

In the end, the movie is a beautiful, complete, moving experience, and years from now will be regarded as one of Benegal's most layered films. I'm going with four of out five and two big thumbs up for Shyam Benegal's Welcome To Sajjanpur. It's a sweet, simple story of life in a village, a bittersweet tale of human frailties, a small film with a very big heart. Watch it because gems like these are hard to find.

Law students and lawyers suffer twice or even thrice as much psychological distress as medical students and others, according to a representative study conducted in Australia.

The study, conducted by the University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI), included over 2,400 lawyers and 741 law students from 13 law schools.

Law students were found to have much higher rates of depression than medical students or other general students at the university. Significantly, law students were also found to be less knowledgeable about depression, but had greater concerns about alcohol and other substance misuse and greater reluctance to seek professional care....

IBM - Right now this is the most firing company for IT professionals. In the last 6 months, this company has fired nearly 20% of their employees because of Background checks and performance issues. This is the most insecure company from an IT professional’s point of view. They don’t have any strategic plans at HR policies regarding employee security. No appraisals (maximum 10%).

TCS - Previously it was functioning as a government IT Company . Now a days TCS has also become a firing major IT company. Recently it fired on 500 people - mostly people below 2 years of experience and TCS has also lost so many projects recently( especially British Telecom Projects).

Accenture - This is second top most firing company. The firing rate is around 5%. This depends upon outsourced projects; they have a unique system where Accenture development centers around the world bid for a project coming into the company.
